How are L-shaped desk tops constructed?

There are many ways to join 2 desk tops together to make an L-shaped desk. If the return is substantial enough, desk tops are connected with the grain running perpendicular, this makes the top much stronger. Our workshops generally use 3 galvanised steel worktop connector bolts per L-shaped top. “Dog bones” are routed into the underside of the worktops to provide space for the bolts, the connector bolts are tightened with a spanner.

This construction method is great for large L-shaped tops, which would often struggle to fit into vans for delivery, doorways and stairwells. The work top connector bolts can be installed on-site with minimal effort.

We do not recommend a mitre joint for L-shaped desk tops. This style of join requires longer lengths, and so involves more wastage, additionally, it is harder to adequately strengthen.

We recommend at least 22mm thickness to ensure there is enough wood to support the strong connection (after routing). Further reading: How thick does a solid wood desk top need to be?

Shaped inside corners

The inside corner for the L-shaped desk top can square (no additional wood connecting the desk from the return), triangle or curved. The curve can also be inset (see picture below).

Adequate support for L-shaped desk tops

L-shaped desk tops need to be well supported. L-shaped desk frames (sit/stand or fixed) do a good job ensuring the key areas have the support they need. If your desk does not need to be height adjustable, individual legs, industrial box legs or battens can do the job too. This post discusses leg placement.
