IKEA Mittzon & solid wood desk tops: everything you need to know

IKEA replaced the Bekant with the Mittzon in 2024. If you have a Mittzon frame (or you are thinking of buying one) and you want to know how a solid wood top fits into the picture, this post covers everything you need to know before ordering.

What is the IKEA Mittzon?

The Mittzon is IKEA’s current office desk system, launched in 2024 as a direct replacement for the Bekant. Like the Bekant before it, it comes in both fixed-height and sit/stand (electric) versions and is designed as a modular system. Desk tops, underframes, plug-in modules and storage are all sold separately and mix and match across the range. The sit/stand version has a height range of 60cm to 124cm (frame only), dual motors, two programmable memory positions, collision detection and a 10-year guarantee.

Visually it is a significantly different to the Bekant. Square-profile legs replace the old round columns, the frame is available in white and black, and the top has an integrated cable area/plug-in module at at the back, in a solid colour to match the frame.

The depth: what “600-800mm” actually means on a Mittzon

This is the most important thing to understand before ordering a solid wood top for a Mittzon, so it is worth reading carefully.

The Mittzon uses a plug-in module: a 120mm deep cable management channel that attaches to the rear of the frame and runs the full width of the desk. The desk top itself fixes to the frame at the back edge and sits in front of this module.

ElementDepth
Solid wood top480-680mm
Plug-in module (cable channel)120mm
Total desk depth600-800mm

When we make a solid wood top for your Mittzon, we are replacing the 680mm laminate section. The plug-in module stays as IKEA supply it. Your top should be ordered at 480-680mm deep, not 800mm.

Can the depth be adjusted?

With care, and within limits. The back edge of the top is fixed to the frame. It is integral to the structure and cannot be moved or extended. Any depth variation therefore affects the front of the desk only. A modest front overhang is fine. There is no support past the frame footprint, so it is not something to push too far. Going shallower than 680mm is not recommended as the top will not cover the frame properly.

The Mittzon is tighter on depth tolerance than most frames we work with.

Thickness

The standard Mittzon laminate top is 20mm thick. Our standard Mittzon solid wood tops are also made at 20mm (oak, pine or walnut) so they sit flush with the plug-in module at the rear.

If you want a thicker top, you can order any standard size at a different thickness. Add “Mittzon, [thickness]mm [wood]” to the extras field (e.g. “Mittzon, 32mm oak”) and we will pre-drill to fit. A thicker top will sit higher than the plug-in module at the rear. Not a structural problem, but worth being aware of visually.

Width: standard or oversized?

The standard approach is a top that matches your frame width exactly: 1200mm, 1400mm or 1600mm. This is what the options on our Mittzon product page cover. Straightforward, no extras required.

If you want the top to be oversized, overhanging the frame on both sides, you need at least 50mm of overhang per side. So a minimum of 1300mm for a 1200mm frame, 1500mm for a 1400mm frame, and so on. An oversized top also requires the full 800mm depth, as it will have a recessed cutout at the rear to accommodate the plug-in module. There is some material waste in this approach (you are paying for a full 800mm deep board and losing 120mm by the full width to the cutout) but it is a clean result.

To order this, use our custom sized top product and add “Mittzon compatible” to the extras field. This triggers the pre-drilling, free (optional) planing to 20mm, and the cable management cutout. Specify the full footprint (e.g. 1300 x 800mm). If you would prefer to keep the top at 22mm rather than have it planed to 20mm, add “Mittzon compatible, 22mm” instead. No custom shape fee applies, saving ÂŁ50.

Why upgrade from the standard Mittzon laminate?

The standard Mittzon tops are 20mm particleboard with a melamine foil surface. Fine for everyday use, but they will not take the strain of monitor arms or camera clamps. Particleboard does not grip a clamp the way solid wood does, and the surface can deform around the fixing point over time. A solid wood top also adds useful mass to a sit/stand desk, reducing wobble at standing height. And the aesthetic difference is considerable.

Which wood?

We offer Mittzon tops in oak, pine and walnut. Oak is the most popular. The Mittzon’s clean square-profile legs work well with a natural or lightly oiled oak surface. Walnut is the premium option if you want something darker and more distinctive. Pine is the most affordable and takes paint well if you want the solid wood construction without the grain on show.
